Its fun and easy to be a contestant!
Here’s what you need to know:
The simplest way of thinking of Mr Bear Canterbury is that it is a spoof on beauty pageants!
However we are much more inclusive and body positive! We celebrate a huge range of people, and you can win just as much for your personality than for how you look!
Here’s a quick look at previous winners:
You’ll be on-stage twice, so you’ll need two outfits.
The first time we’d like you to be in Bear Casual Wear for your introduction to the audience. You can wear normal, everyday clothing. You will be asked 2 or 3 questions from the M.C.
Next comes Bear Fantasy – the interpretation of this category is up to you, be creative. You can do whatever you like to show yourself off. If you have a particular party trick to make yourself stand out, then this is the ideal time to show it. This should be no more than 2-3 minutes so the best thing is to choose a piece of music that you can time your piece to that will fade down. (We can you help edit a piece of music to fit).
YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET NAKED! You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. We want you to have a good time, and remember, the audience will be cheering you on!

- .. anything you like! Make it short and sweet – and don’t worry the audience will love you whatever you do!
The judges will be marking you in areas of:
- Communication / Confidence / Attitude / Crowd-pleasing
- Embodiment of “Bear values”.
- Commitment to social good – not just in the bear and gay communities, but also in the world at large.
- Your fundraising raffle sales and promotion of a safe sex message throughout the Big Bear Weekend events.
